TAKEAWAY
The initial takeaway sequence contributes in subtle ways to the rhythm of the backswing and the needed lower body stability for a smooth efficient transition into the downswing. To analyze it, we look at the first couple of feet through which the club moves away from the ball.
In the most efficient kinematic sequence in the takeaway the club moves away from the ball first, then the upper body starts rotating, then the pelvis starts rotating. It's the opposite sequence we want to see in the transition and in the downswing.
The above figure shows K-Vest data from an efficient takeaway sequence. We look for a pattern similar to the sequence shown here. This movement pattern is difficult to see with conventional video, and this graph illustrates the value of 3D motion capture for analyzing a swing and developing a training plan for corrective exercises and drills when problems are identified.
